"Stimulus" Pork

Mr. Obama would have us believe that unless we pass his 900 billion dollar "stimulus" package immediately, our entire nation is going to plunge into oblivion. That's right, no time to study or rationally review anything! Just throw massive amounts of money at random targets and "hope" it all somehow gets better.

Didn't we learn anything at ALL from the last "stimulus" fiasco? More precisely... is there anybody left in Washington with a brain? And why the big rush Mr. President? Could it be because your "stimulus" package is so full of pork it virtually oinks?

It's been jokingly referred to as every Democratic special interest group's 40 Year Wish List. Most American's don't find that funny. Even The Wall Street Journal said "By our estimate only $90 billion out of $825 billion, or about 12 cents of every $1, is for something that can plausibly be considered a growth stimulus. And even many of these projects aren't likely to help the economy immediately. The rest is pork." Here's some of what we can expect out of this newest spending orgy. The only thing it stimulates is my sense of outrage!!! What part of THIS COUNTRY IS ALREADY BANKRUPT do they not understand?

•$2 billion earmark to re-start FutureGen, a near-zero emissions coal power plant in Illinois that the Dept. of Energy defunded last year because it said the project was inefficient.

• A $246 million tax break for Hollywood movie producers to buy motion picture film.

• $650 million for the digital television converter box coupon program.

• $88 million for the Coast Guard to design a new polar icebreaker (arctic ship).

• $448 million for constructing the Department of Homeland Security headquarters.

• $248 million for furniture at the new Homeland Security headquarters.

• $600 million to buy hybrid vehicles for federal employees.

• $400 million for the Centers for Disease Control to screen and prevent STD's.

• $1.4 billion for rural waste disposal programs.

• $125 million for the Washington sewer system.

• $150 million for Smithsonian museum facilities.

• $1 billion for the 2010 Census, which has a projected cost overrun of $3 billion.

• $75 million for "smoking cessation activities."

• $200 million for public computer centers at community colleges.

• $75 million for salaries of employees at the FBI.

• $25 million for tribal alcohol and substance abuse reduction.

• $500 million for flood reduction projects on the Mississippi River.

• $10 million to inspect canals in urban areas.

• $6 billion to turn federal buildings into "green" buildings.

• $500 million for state and local fire stations.

• $650 million for wildland fire management on forest service lands.

• $1.2 billion for "youth activities," including youth summer job programs.

• $88 million for renovating the headquarters of the Public Health Service.

• $412 million for CDC buildings and property.

• $500 million for building and repairing National Institutes of Health facilities
in Bethesda, Maryland.

• $160 million for "paid volunteers" at the Corporation for National and Community Service.

• $5.5 million for "energy efficiency initiatives" at the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration.

• $850 million for Amtrak.

• $100 million for reducing the hazard of lead-based paint.

• $75 million to construct a "security training" facility for State Department Security officers when they can be trained at existing facilities of other agencies.

• $110 million to the Farm Service Agency to upgrade computer systems.

• $200 million in funding for the lease of alternative energy vehicles for use on military installations.

Oink. Oink. Oink.

Since when is stopping STD's pork? The CDC funding would go to NCHHSTP which includes Hepatitis, HIV, TB, and STD's. The money will/was/would go straight out to the state public health departments that would be able to specifically rehire positions that were cut over the last several years due to deceases in funding from the CDC to those programs and cuts by states in funding those programs. What did you think, they'd hand out $5 bills saying 'Don't get the clap'? That's recreating jobs lost under Bush, helping states keep public health programs going, and reducing health care costs in the long run.

Pork indeed.

Lady, stick to the soap making and leave the politics to someone who actually has an idea. Is everyone in Texas as jaded as you? I came here to learn more about soap and things, but just got totally put off by your shallow comments, not really great for business, but i suppose your hoping Obama fails too so you can toot your horn and feel better about supporting bush for the last 8 years. Republican's Unite!!! I hear Joe the plumber is available for speaking engagements, maybe he can put together a plan that will have us all on easy street in no time! Oink Oink! back atcha...

Woah ...David...you're making some mighty big (and shallow) assumptions here yourself. I'm not a Republican. I have NEVER supported George Bush...and I'm an intelligent and informed voter who you don't see eye to eye with. So be it.

And what do you object to about reducing lead-based paint? Should the poor be subjected to the health ramifications of our country's refusal to outlaw it (we held off until 1973 I believe while other countries long before that, I think in the late 1800's took it off the market because it KILLS people!)? You don't put it in your products because it is bad for you, right? Or providing youth programs so our kids have options besides violent gangs and mindless TV and video games? Or maybe expanding Amtrak so there are other options to flying. HUGE carbon footprint every time you fly, and excellent moving weapon as we saw Sept. 11. And as a former resident of Northern California who just experienced a 100 year burn that was the result of the government neglecting forest management, I am insulted that you would be opposed to that. Many of our local resident died from complications from the smoke, and simple forest management would have prevented the catastrophic nature of the fire. And having read your comments on healthcare, I am surprised that $75 million for smoking cessation is a problem. Really, let's keep killing ourselves and letting the insurance companies and Big Tobacco profit. You didn't include the tidbit McCain was complaining about - tattoo removal for LA County. I'm sure you'll object to that as well, but do you have any idea why that would be beneficial to the people there? Gang tattoos - that is what would be removed with that money. Not some silly little girl's I love Danny tattoo. A gang tattoo can limit a life and also incite violence on the streets if the person happens to be in the wrong neighborhood. I don't know how you can call yourself and informed citizen. Apparently you read John McCain's blog for your information. Glad I read your blog before I bought your soap.

Thanks for reading my blog Megan. What I object to is our government ramrodding through an economic "stimulus" bill full of earmark spending that has nothing to do with stimulating the economy! No one was even able to read the darn thing for crying out loud!

Of course I don't want children exposed to lead paint, or people to die in forest fires. But the fact is that America is bankrupt, and we simply cannot keep spending ourselves into oblivion. It is not the government's role to take care of everyone or to make every wrong situation right, and it is certainly not government's role to help people quit smoking or to remove tatoos! Those are personal choices that unfortunately have negative consequences.

Personal responsibility is what is needed in this country. Most of the problems you speak of should be handled personally in the private sector by friends and neighbors and churches or at the very least at the state level. And I dare say most of them would be if the federal government wasn't bleeeding us of every spare dime we earn!

I've never read John McCains blog nor do I plan to...but I do plan to continue to fight for limited government, fiscal responsibility, and personal freedom...the values this country was founded upon...NONE of which is represented by these out of control economic "stimulus" packages.
